In this article, we look to highlight the top 20 Record labels in Nigeria who are on the top of their game and consistent.
1. Marvins Record
This list has to begin with one of the very best record labels we have in Nigeria, Marvin’s Record. This label was founded by two legendary music duo and icon. Don Jazzy and D’banj.
Although they both split in 2011, Don Jazzy went right one ahead to found the supreme Marvin dynasty in 2012.
A few popular artistes under this label are; Johnny Drille, Tiwa Savage, and Korede Bello.
2. Kennis Music
The label that introduced us, or rather introduced 2face to the limelight. In the late 1990s, Jenni’s Music was founded by the Nigerian radio presenter DJ Kenny Ogungbe.
Through this record label, we have seen the likes of Sound sultan, Sir Shina Peters and a lot of OGs in the Nigerian music industry.
3. Empire Mates Entertainment (EME)
Founded by Bankole Wellington (Banky W) while still studying in a university in Albany, the United States in the year 2002.
Niyola, Banky W, Mr. Capable are few of the popular names that this record label groomed.
Wizkid was initially a member of the EME record, until the expiration of his contract. His song, “Ayo” released in 2014 under this label, was a major hit.
4. Chocolate City
The chocolate city is one of the biggest record labels in the country. Founded by Audu Maikori, Paul Okeugo, and Yahaya Maikori.
Initially, the chocolate city began as a night club, then progressed to becoming a promotions company, then finally a record label.
IcePrince, Nosa, Pryse as a few artists that represent this record label.
5. YBNL Nation
An abbreviation of (Yahoo Boy No Laptop), founded by Olamide in 2012. In a short period of the record label being in existence, it has rapidly gained a lot of traction and popularity among a lot of Nigerians.
We had popular acts, Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh signed under YBNL.
6. Made Men Music Group
Founded by Ubi Ufem in 2010, then headed to becoming Julius Agwu Assistant. Ubi Ufem also worked with
Ayo Makun and a lot of other artists before he became a show promoter.
Later on, he became a manager to Inyanya, who was the first recording artist after the launch of the Made Men Music group since 2010.
7. G- World Entertainment
You probably have heard a song from kiss daniel, then you should give tribute to his record label, The G- World Entertainment.
Founded by Festus Ehimare, and established in 2007. Their first performing artiste was kiss daniel, in 2013.
8. Love world Records
This record label, owned by Pastor. Chris Oyakhilome is geared toward grooming gospel artistes. Love world record was founded in 2009 and a lot of notable gospel artiste belong to this record label. Frank Edwards, Joe Praize Eben, Buchi to mention a few are ambassadors of the Love World Records.
9. KayCee Records
Owned and managed by Kennedy Kesidi Richard and Kingsley Chibuzor Aguoru, established in the United Kingdom. Far back as 1955, Kaycee Records has been promoting a lot of Nigerian acts In the United Kingdom.
10. 960 Music
With their headquarter in Lagos and headed by Mark Redguard (at the time this article was written), 960 Music remains a top music record label in Nigeria.
Furthermore, 960 music has a lot of standalone record labels under them; Hypertek Digital, Ultima Productions, and Password, AAristokrat Records.
Founded in 2013 and becoming the first record label in the country to have a lot of other independent labels under its supervision.
11. Capitol Hill Records
The Capitol Hill Records, owned by Clarence Peters the son of Sir Shina Peters. They have had a lot of popular acts under their label. Tha Suspect, rapper Kel, Chidinma are a few of the spotlight acts of the Capitol Hill Records.
Just a few years ago, all the acts under this record label collaborated to sing a song; “Finally (Adekunle)”.
12. Five Star Music
Emeka Okonkwo, or E-money, the brain behind Five Star Music. Although they do not have a blissful story concerning their existence, they recently signed a young act and rapper; Xbusta and as it stands, he commands a lot of hype and paparazzi.
13. StarBoy Entertainment
After leaving EME records, Wizkid established his very own record label in 2013. Some acts under this label included; LAX, Legendary Beats, and Maleek Berry.
Honorable Kings of New-School remains on of the top record labels in the country. Owned by Davido and under this record label; Shina Rambo, B-Red signed on to this label.
15. Square Records
The Former music duo Psquare owned this record label. Peter and Paul Okoye. They were the only artiste signed to this label.
16. Alapomeji Ancestral Records
9ice, also a music icon in Nigeria, founded this record label in 2008 not long when he left Edge Records. In 2013, it was confirmed that Alapomeji Records singed on artists like Seriki Omo-Owo, Kayefi and Wise, they reportedly left the label citing a lack of respect for their acts. 9ice re-branded the Alapomeji Ancestral Records in 2015.
17. Kalakuta Republic
This unique label, founded by Fela Kuti was located in Mushin, Lagos. Beyond just a record label, it was also a “health clinic”.
18. Edge Record
Jahbless and Ibrahim Okulaja founded Edge Records in 2005. 9ice became the first music act to be signed to this record label.
19. Soul Muzik
Founded in 2008 by soul singer Dare Art Alade (Darey). Mo’Eazy is a recent artist signed by Darey Art-Alade’s Soul Muzik Label.
Although out of business, this list would be seamlessly incompletely without mentioning this record label. Founded in 2004 by the duo of D’Banj and Don Jazzy. Wande Coal, Dr. Sid and D Price were a famous bunch from this record label.
